Trends for Autumn/Winter 22

WHAT’S IN NOW?

Autumn has officially arrived, so which fashion trends do you need to sit up and take notice of for Autumn/Winter 22?

As always, the catwalks for this season were all about drama and extremes, but there are definite trends that have filtered through into clothes that we will actually want to wear this season.

I’m not about slavishly following current trends but adding just a couple of new, key pieces (that you love and will enjoy wearing) into your wardrobe will update and refresh your look. Also, think about checking your existing wardrobe for the things that you might not have worn for a while, but could be brought back in and channelled into Autumn/Winter 22.

Here are my top five new season trends…

  1. THE TANK TOP

Call them sleeveless jumpers if you prefer (I was dressed in tank tops and flares as a child in the ‘70s!), but they are a cold weather winner. They provide warmth when a thick jumper is too much, and can also add texture and pattern to a simple outfit.

Good worn over a long sleeve tee, a collared shirt or on its own, under a blazer. For a neat look, go for a fitted shape and tuck into the waist of trousers.

2. STATEMENT LEATHER

Leather – faux or real – is always around in the colder months, usually in the form of a jacket or trousers. The trend for this season is for more exaggerated with bold leather pieces for everyday wear. Think a shirt, a dress or a jacket with sharp, exaggerated shoulders.

Wearing it top-to-toe might feel like a step too far, but a leather shirt worn with boyfriend jeans or a skirt with a relaxed jumper and knee boots is very wearable and has more than a bit of ‘style edge’.

3. THE PLEATED SKIRT

Whether it’s flowy chiffon, satin look or faux leather, a midi length pleated skirt feels chic and glamorous with added swish factor! They’re surprisingly flexible when it comes to styling. Pair with a tailored blazer or coat for a sophisticated look, or with a cosy jumper and trainers or chunky boots for a dressed-down look.

Worn with the same colour top or fine knit jumper, it creates the effect of a dress, and can be elegant evening wear worn with a cut-out top and heels.

4. THE WESTERN BOOT

2022 is the year of the cowboy or western boot, and it’s a very wearable style, giving your outfit a bit of a rock ’n’ roll edge. Black is the classic colour but white or cream looks very modern. When dressing for a special occasion, go for a metallic pair worn with a velvet or embellished dress for maximum impact.

Skinny jeans can be tucked in, or short/mid height boots look good with straight, cropped jeans. Make your legs look longer by matching the colour of your jeans with your boots.

5. THE COLOUR PINK

It is fashion’s colour of the year. Love it or loathe it, hot pink is a big colour trend continuing into Autumn/Winter. From fluorescent pink to fuchsia, this bold and striking colour will add a vibrant touch to your look. A bright pink dress or pair of trousers is an instant statement, or wear a pink top with a navy or grey suit for contrast. Add a colour pop to a neutral outfit with pink shoes or a bag to completely change the look.

For a cost-effective and sustainable way to access the trend, try dyeing an old white or cream t-shirt bright pink!
