Know the Trends For Spring '23
how to navigate the key trends
—
Hooray! After what feels like a long winter (doesn’t it always?), spring is on the horizon and the shiny, brand new season collections are arriving instore and online.
If you’re thinking about updating your wardrobe, or wondering what you can dig out and bring back into circulation (as we know fashion is cyclical), here are 5 wearable key trends you need to know about.
cargo trousers
—
If you buy one thing for spring, make it a pair of multi-pocketed cargo trousers. Not the huge, low rise parachute style as worn by All Saints in the 90’s, but a slightly relaxed, tailored wide leg version that will work with your existing wardrobe.
Look for oversized pockets to make a subtle style statement, in colours other than the obvious khaki or beige. Wear with a white shirt and blazer and smart trainers rather than a hoodie and Converse, for a more elevated look.
2. Cobalt blue
—
Fed up of bright pink? Try cobalt as bright, fresh alternative. You can wear it as stunning head to toe statement, or more subtly as a single piece of clothing or an accessory.
It’s an incredibly elegant colour that complements all skin tones. It will add energy and intensity to classic, neutral colours such as grey, navy or ivory, and works really well with camel, red and orange to create more contrast. Score extra style points by pairing it with Pantone’s Colour of the Year, Viva Magenta!
3. Denim
—
Designers such as Givenchy and Burberry went mad for all denim outfits – tops, dresses and midi skirts – in their runway shows, and what appears on the catwalk filters through to the high street.
Of course, you’ll already have the jeans, but for dresses, blouses and skirts, look for more fluid, drapey fabrics that are more comfortable to wear than rigid denim. A denim dress is a great buy, it has a casual vibe, and can be worn with boots, trainers or sandals. Leave the matching denim jacket at home though unless you’re confident about making a statement!
4. metallics
—
Think daytime shine, don’t just save it for evening. Wearable separates will liven up the most basic wardrobe staples like sweatshirts and jeans. All metallics – gold, bronze, rose gold and silver – work really well for daytime as part of an otherwise simple, pared down outfit.
A metallic knit looks great over a white shirt with wide leg trousers. A metallic pleated skirt is perfect with a relaxed roll neck or ‘v’ neck jumper. I have seen silver trousers around, a brave look but they look amazing with a denim shirt and trainers.
5. Fringing
—
It’s big this season and it’s a great way to add drama to your look. It’s an ideal trend for spring/summer as it doesn't work that well with coats – you want the tassel detailing to be on show!
Fully fringed dresses are an option if you’re looking for a party outfit, whereas as dress with fringing along the hemline is a more subtle take on the look, and it gives a lovely, swishy and glamorous effect. Ideal for dancing or for sunny breaks, fringing gives every item of clothing added depth and movement.
