Flares are back as a credible alternative to skinnies. With their figure-hugging fit around the waist, bum and thighs, they widen out below the knee into a bell bottom shape and flatter all bodyshapes. The best thing about them is their ability to give the illusion of longer legs no matter what your height! Great news for me, as I have a long body and short legs so they help to balance my proportions.
keep them modern
My first tip on styling this silhouette now, is to look for a high waisted style. Last time around, they were low rise so the look is different. High is more flattering as they create a longer leg line and help to hold in a bit of a tummy.
Secondly, they need to be the right length so that the back of the hem almost touches the ground. Any higher and they look frumpy, and much longer and they’ll drag on the ground and look scruffy. You might need to have them hemmed to the correct length and have two pairs - longer ones for wearing with heels and shorter ones for chunky boots or trainers.
Lastly, balance. If your flares are super wide, keep things more tailored and fitted on top. It’ll be less overwhelming on your body and look much more flattering.
*Note on Footwear - Flares need wedges, platforms or chunky boots/trainers for a bit of lift to avoid the legs looking short.
4 WAYS TO STYLE YOUR FLARES
1. T-SHIRT & LEATHER JACKET
—
A simple, no fail combination that is classic but a little bit edgy. Keep the top tucked in and the jacket quite short so that your waist is still visible.
Wear with boots, trainers or open toe platform sandals in warmer weather.
2. blazer & fitted top
—
This is a smart casual look that works for a less formal work outfit or to smarten up jeans for going out. Make sure the top is neat fitting or things may turn scruffy rather than chic.
Try a cropped blazer to balance the wider hem jeans, or a longer line blazer with the top tucked in to highlight your waist.
3. with an oversized shirt
—
A shirt is one of the most versatile items and it’s the perfect partner for flared jeans. A classic look, tuck the shirt into the waistband of your jeans, to define your waist and give the illusion of longer legs. For a more relaxed feel, half-tuck at the front for coverage around the back.
A white or a light blue shirt looks crisp and very stylish with dark blue jeans.
4. with a pretty blouse or jumper
—
Wearing a blouse with a pair of flared jeans will have you ready for brunch, a casual Friday or even an event if you want a casual chic look.
A blouse is a staple piece in my wardrobe as it’s both feminine and stylish and has an air of French chic! They’re great for the office but they also dress up a casual look and make you look more polished.
It’s a look that can be quite dressy if you add a pair of heels. Make sure you tuck in the blouse for a cleaner look.
